Byte Camp


Byte Camp has been in business for 14 years. We are a non-profit organization that provides fun and engaging creative technology learning opportunities to children all over Vancouver Island, Vancouver, and Calgary. We pride ourselves in consistently achieving an environment for our participants and our instructors to challenge themselves, learn new skills, and be creative. Our number one priority is to each week make sure kids have the best week of their summer.

For our summer programs we partner with 8 different locations in Calgary and over 50 different locations in B.C.

How many people does your organization employ? How many locally?

Every year for the months of June-August our organization employs 60 staff in total. 12 of those positions are locals.

What type of positions do you offer?

We offer Full-Time seasonal employment.

What are the benefits of working for your company?

Over the years, those who have worked for Byte Camp have shared that it was beneficial to them, in that they were able to put to good practice the skills & knowledge gained from and directly related to their education. We typically hire university and high school students who are studying computer science, art, film making, education, engineering (to name a few).

Describe opportunities for advancement.

If employees show promise there is room for quick advancement in our organization. Often times, instructors may start in an assistant position at the beginning of the summer and by the end will have moved up into a lead in training or lead instructor position.

We are looking for Lead and Assistant Instructors for our summer programs.

How would someone find out about opportunities at your company? How can a candidate apply?

We do all of our hiring beginning near the end of Feburary and running through all of March. We post our job ads on various job search sites, indeed.com being the most common one.

Describe your hiring and interview process?

Typically we ask for a cover letter and resume and a 45 minute interview.

What do you look for in an employee?

We look for fun and energetic individuals who have a love for learning and teaching. There will be outdoor games involved in our summer camps and so there must be a level of comfort to play with children from 9-14 years old.

What type of education/training/equipment do you require?

We provide an intensive 3 day training program in Crofton B.C and ask that those who apply be able to attend the full the 3 days. We typically hire university and high school students. We do ask for a first aid certificate and that a criminal record check be done.

What is the minimum age required to work for your company? Are there different age requirements for different positions?

The minimum age to work for our organization is 16 years old. Typically high school students will begin as an assistant position. However we do not have a hard and fast rule about this. The position offered to each applicant is largely based on their maturity level and their ability to handle several tasks related to their position.

Provide a wage range for entry level positions.

Assistant Instructor = $12.50/hr 35-40 hours a week
Instructor in Training = $13.50/hr 35-40 hours a week
Lead Instructor = $15.50/hr 40 hours a week.

What are the hours of the business and general shift times? Are there a minimum number of hours someone needs to work per week? Is there flexibility regarding school schedules?

During the months of July and August the schedule will be Monday-Friday from 8:30 am - 4:30 pm. We ask that those who apply commit to as much work as possible during those two months. There's some flexibility in vacation time.

Is a uniform provided or do employees have to pay for it?

We do not require a uniform for our organization. A name tag will be provided to all staff.
